How to Prevent a Virus
There are a number of preventative measures you can take to protect yourself against viruses and other types of malware.
- The most important step to take in preventing a virus is to install an anti virus program on to your PC. There are some very good free anti virus software programs available, and you can buy a program from as little as £15 up to around £65. Once you have installed an anti virus program it is important to keep it up to date by running weekly updates on your computer as an out of date anti virus program is about as good as no program at all.
- Keep your computer up to date with security fixes. For example, if your home computer runs Microsoft Windows visit the Windows update site or enable automatic updating.
- Be very careful about opening email attachments as many computers are infected by viruses this way. You should never open an attachment from anyone you don't know unless you are expecting it and are certain it is from a reliable source.
- It is a good idea to install a firewall on your PC. A firewall can help stop a virus from spreading.
- Don't download programs from the Internet unless you are certain of their origin and that they can be trusted. Many types of malware find their way on to PCs this way.
- Don't install programs from CD Roms or other portable media unless you can be sure they are from a legitimate source that you can trust.
