anti virus Glossary
- Adware - A slightly less malicious form of Spyware which usually displays unwanted pop-up advertisements.
- Anti virus - A software program designed to identify and remove a known or potential computer virus.
- Cyber threats - Threats of damage via the Internet and email.
- Firewall - specialized hardware or software designed to secure a computer or network from unauthorized access.
- Malware - Short for malicious software. A generic term used to describe any form of malicious software; e.g., viruses, worms etc.
- Phishing - the practice whereby a fraudster, who is pretending to be from a legitimate organisation, sends misleading emails requesting personal and financial details.
- Spam - Junk email. The name given to e-mail promotions or advertisements (and scams) to people that have not asked for it.
- Spyware - A computer program which can be installed on personal computers (usually without the permission from the owner), and has the purpose of collecting information and sending it back to another source.
- Trojans - Malware disguised as innocent software.
- Virus - A software program capable of reproducing itself and usually capable of causing great harm to files or other programs on the same computer.
- Worm - A computer worm is a self-replicating computer program, similar to a computer virus. A virus attaches itself to, and becomes part of, another program; a worm is self-contained and does not need to be part of another program to transmit itself.
